Why No Mom or Grandma Should Resign Herself to Spider Veins

We are closing in on the summer months in Florida and every week it is getting even warmer! It is the time of the year when you want to wear lighter feel the springclothes to keep cool, like shorts or skirts. And don’t forget summer activities like a trip to the pool or beach with the kids! But for some people, wearing shorts or a bathing suit can make them incredibly self-conscious, because of two small but very noticeable afflictions: spider veins and varicose veins.

Some people use spider veins and varicose veins interchangeably, but they are actually two different, though related, conditions. With spider veins, a number of dark, small blood vessels can be seen close to the surface of the skin. With varicose veins, the blood vessels are distended, and actually protrude from the skin. Either way, they can be extremely noticeable on the legs.

What causes them? There are a number of different factors. Some people just have a genetic predisposition to them. But one of the most common causes is the arrival of menopause. Hormonal changes can wreak havoc in the body, and spider veins are a perfect example of that. They tend to increase in frequency and number with age, and are more common in women than men.

Here is some good news, though! Although spider veins are a very noticeable condition, they are mostly harmless, at least in terms of your health. Most people hate the look of spider veins, and they certainly don’t make you want to show off that new bathing suit! The lighter your skin, the easier the dark blood veins are to see. Thankfully, we can get rid of them with a simple cosmetic procedure called Sclerotherapy.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is, by far, the best method of treating spider veins. Developed in the 1930s, this minimally invasive procedure can completely eliminate the appearance of spider veins with a minimum of two treatments.

Using a tiny needle to minimize discomfort, we inject a solution into the visible veins that causes them to immediately shrink down and the blood inside to clot. Then, over the course of a few weeks, your body’s own natural healing processes will go to work on the damaged blood vessels, breaking them down and reabsorbing them. It is that simple.

The procedure is very easy and can be completed within an hour. After treatment, you will be required to wear a compression stocking for five days, to promote healing and prevent the recurrence of more veins. The after-effects are minor, with itching and slight bruising being the most common.

Yes, spider veins can be annoying! They are very easy to see and can make you feel embarrassed. But really, there is no need to be concerned. With just a few trips to Azul Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Spa for Sclerotherapy, those veins will be a thing of the past! Bring on the beach!
