The ABC’s of CoolSculpting
- Posted on: Nov 1 2020
Many people are floored to learn that CoolSculpting destroys about 20%-25% of the fat cells in targeted areas of your body. The evidence is real – and the outcome for many patients is pure joy when getting rid of unwanted fat bulges!
A. What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is the brand name for a fat-freezing method that aims to get rid of stubborn fat in certain parts of your body. The method is called cryolipolysis. The CoolSculpting system uses this science to its advantage by delivering intense cold to a targeted area of your body from the outside without any incisions. The injured fat cells are gradually eliminated by the body over 4 to 6 months. During that time the fatty bulge decreases in size, with an average fat reduction of about 20 percent.
Harvard researchers discovered that when they delivered cold energy to a fatty area, the skin and other tissues would be unharmed, while the fat cells would be damaged then slowly die off.
B. Is It Safe?
Absolutely, and it takes no more than 35 minutes per treatment to begin the fat destroying process in smaller areas of your body and upwards to an hour for larger areas. The CoolSculpting device was cleared by the FDA to reduce subcutaneous fat. There are no activity restrictions. Patients sometimes feel sore after the treatment, as if they had worked out.
Dr. Patrick Flaharty, and our team, use this completely non-invasive procedure to reduce those trouble spots on the abdomen, flanks (“love handles”), hips, thighs, double chins, and backs to melt fat away in brief, comfortable treatments. The best candidates for CoolSculpting are close to their goal weights but have some stubborn fat in these areas that they would like to reduce.

C. How Do I Start CoolSculpting?
You can contact us for a free consultation. Most patients get started during their first visit!
After an assessment of the dimensions and shape of the areas to be treated, the CoolSculpting appropriate applicator is chosen. The area of concern is marked to identify the site for applicator placement. A gel pad is placed to protect the skin. The applicator is applied, and the bulge is vacuumed into the hollow of the applicator. The temperature inside the applicator drops, and as it does so, the area numbs. That means it’s working!
Patients typically use their smart phone, read or watch Netflix during the procedure. After the treatment, the vacuum turns off, the applicator is removed and the area is massaged, which may improve the final results.
