Sunblock & Sunshine! Warm Weather Tips to Protect Your Skin
- Posted on: Jun 21 2023
Summer is upon us, and we know what this means—fun at the pool, strolls under the sun, and relaxing days. This can be very good for you because sunlight is a great source of vitamin D, but it might not be as fun for your skin.
Excessive sun exposure can lead to various side effects, such as dark spots, leathery skin, wrinkles, and more, and it can sometimes be difficult to relax after a day out when you are feeling the after-effects of sunburns. So, when the sun is out to get you, you must protect yourself, and we’ve got just the right tips for you.
1. Get a Good SPF!
When it’s summer, there is one thing that you absolutely cannot leave the house without and that is sunblock. Excessive sunlight exposure can lead to various skin conditions, from premature aging to cancer. Sunblock can prevent that from happening and you should apply it after you are done with your usual skincare routine.
Also, make sure that you use the appropriate SPF level. For example, our Tinted Natural Defense sunscreen with SPF30 is more than enough to keep your skin protected (when applied throughout the day). Not to mention that tinted products are great because they give your skin a smooth finish and even out your skin tone. You get to enjoy the perks of a made-up face with just sunscreen!
2. Go Light on the Skincare
In the summer, you will likely sweat a lot and sun exposure can also cause your skin to produce excess oil, putting you at risk for clogged pores. In this case, the last thing you want is a heavy product sitting on your face, making you feel like you are suffocating underneath the makeup.
To make things easier for you, you may want to swap the heavy products for those with a light and breathable formula. For instance, if you use an oil-based cleanser on chilly days, you can swap it with a foam-based one on hot, summer days. Our Botanical Cleanser may be a good solution as it has a gentle, lightweight, and non-irritating formula.
3. Make Sure to Exfoliate
During the hotter months, you will likely get a lot of dead skin cells, sweat, oil, and other clogging products on your face. Potential dehydration may also cause your skin to feel extra flaky, which is why you need to remove the damaged outer layer. This leads to the next step: exfoliation.
During summer, your skin might be hypersensitive, so make sure that you use a good yet gentle exfoliating product. Our recommendation would be the Enzyme Polish exfoliating product that uses jojoba beads to remove the dead skin on your face, revealing the layer underneath for a more youthful appearance.
4. Include Vitamin C
The main problem with sunshine is that it can cause a lot of random spots to appear on your skin, along with other imperfections. Vitamin C can be a very useful tool to keep all of those negative effects at bay, as it is the Holy Grail of anti-aging products. You can include products like Dermal C from the Azul® Skin Health line, which is infused with Ferulic Acid and vitamins B and E. These ingredients work together to help you maintain radiant skin!
5. Make Sure to Moisturize
You may be sweating a lot during summer, but that does not mean that you are moisturized. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. With the amount of sweating that you are doing, you’re losing a lot of moisture. And since your pores are prone to clogging, you should use a light moisturizer, like the Azul® Green Tea moisturizer to soothe, hydrate, and calm your skin. You can also bring the hydration down to the rest of your body by adding the Crepe Doctor Lotion into your routine.
