Oily Skin, Be Gone! Let Your Face Shine with Radiance, Not Excess Oil
- Posted on: Aug 11 2016
Are you tired of seeing shine on your skin day after day this summer? I know that many women dread the “oil slick” look and try to avoid it by washing multiple times a day — stop! Excess sebum is naturally created in those with oily skin, which becomes exacerbated with the use of strong detergents in many cleansers. Too frequent cleansing, harsh soaps and hot sun just make the skin’s oil production go into overdrive. Instead of lessening the look of oily skin, this leads to breakouts, blackheads and a bothersome shiny look. The summer season intensifies this, making those with oily skin frustrated.
Fortunately for you, our team is well versed in how to tackle this annoying problem.
Managing Oily Skin at Home
It might seem counterintuitive, but using a harsh cleanser to strip the oils from your face will actually make your problem worse, not better. Natural oils and moisture are necessary to help keep your skin healthy. If you strip your skin down to the surface, your body will jump into action and produce even more oil than your skin needs. Use a gentle cleanser and continue to moisturize with lightweight formulas (lotions instead of creams, water-based instead of oil-based…) to protect the delicate skin-moisture balance. Believe it or not, well-hydrated skin will help to produce less oil.
You can use a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen to keep your skin hydrated and protected. A pack of oil-absorbing blotting sheets helps to wick away oil from your face throughout the day, without messing up your makeup. These are essential for the woman on the go during daily travel, heading to appointments and freshening up after a long day.
Treating Oily Skin at the Spa
Come to our Azul Medical Spa to beat the heat and get back to basics with a refreshing facial. When you leave, you can be sure that your skin will be properly hydrated and protected from UV rays.
At Azul, the gold standard for facials is the HydraFacial MD. The HydraFacial combines three essential pillars of skincare: exfoliation, extraction and hydration. Exfoliation gets rid of dead, oily skin, preventing the formation of pimples or blackheads. By using a small suction device, we extract impurities from the skin, leaving a clean canvas for treatments, serums and UV protection.
As I described above, properly hydrated skin plays a vital role in helping to control oil production. For most people, just one treatment a month is more than enough to keep your skin happy and healthy. But if you do suffer from very oily skin in the summer, we recommend that you come in a little more often. The HydraFacial MD takes just half an hour, so if you’re in a hurry, you can be in and out in no time, making it very easy to schedule into your day.
Between treatments, we encourage you to maintain your results by using the best skincare products. Trilogy Laboratories, our partner at Azul Cosmetic Surgery & Medical Spa, makes incredible products that are specifically designed to complement our treatments and keep your oily skin under control. You’ll definitely want to check them out. My wife, Dr. Kristen Flaharty, is taking her pharmacology degree to the next level by working in the lab creating fantastic products that target a multitude of skin concerns.
There are several options at Azul Medical Spa that can help with your skin challenges, no matter the season. Please give us a call at (239) 415-7576 so we can discuss all of your options.
We’re happy to assist you in making the right selections for your skin while you’re having fun in the sun this summer!
