Microneedling: The Differences Between SkinPen®, Morpheus8™/Genius (RF Microneedling) and PRP Microneedling
- Posted on: Jan 24 2024
Over the years, microneedling has proven to be a highly effective option for skin resurfacing, allowing you to rejuvenate your skin with just one session. However, the treatment has so many applications nowadays that you no longer know which option to use. Between SkinPen®, RF microneedling, and PRP microneedling, which one should you choose? Don’t worry! Let Azul help you!
It all depends on which condition you are planning to treat. Each treatment has its differences, and a consultation will help to determine which option is best for you. In this blog, you will find out more about the different types of microneedling so that you can make your choice with some professional guidance.
What Is Microneedling, and How Can It Help?
When your body sustains any kind of injury, it enters its first stages of healing. To close the wound, you start producing more collagen and elastin, which is also responsible for keeping your skin looking youthful. The more collagen you produce, the plumper your skin looks. However, since your skin loses one percent of its ability to produce collagen every year after your 20s, it inevitably loses its youth and elasticity over time.
This is where microneedling comes in. This minimally invasive procedure uses very thin needles to poke small holes in your dermis. These holes are not big enough to leave scars but can still start your skin’s production of collagen. This procedure can treat a variety of minor problems like scars, wrinkles, enlarged pores, stretch marks, and excess pigmentation.
Different Microneedling-Based Procedures
Microneedling can solve various skin concerns, offering a more even skin tone and texture. However, there are different ways in which this procedure can be used, and here are the options we offer at Azul:
1. SkinPen®
SkinPen® is a device that is at the basics of microneedling, using very small needles to jump-start collagen production. This tool uses a portable cartridge that can fit any number of needles, ranging from one to 42. Most patients will require cartridges that use 12 to 24 needles, but their number will mostly depend on the severity of the skin condition.
When SkinPen® microneedling is used, our providers can set it to penetrate at customizable depths, which range from 0.25mm to 2.5mm. The more severe your skin concerns are, the deeper the needles will go. This will create microchannels in your skin with the controlled injuries starting your body’s natural collagen production.
2. RF Microneedling: Morpheus8™ & Genius™
When you are dealing with skin looseness along with your typical aging signs, your skin needs all the help that it can get. Radiofrequency has been accepted as a good way to treat skin laxity issues, starting new collagen and elastin production and helping you look gradually more youthful.
When used together with microneedling, the anti-aging effects can be even stronger. This is why procedures such as Morpheus8™ and Genius™ were created, mixing the two technologies. After the needles create micro-wounds in your dermis, the radiofrequency energy will be able to travel much deeper, offering a stronger rejuvenating effect. This makes these procedures good options even for deeper facial folds.
3. PRP Microneedling
When simple microneedling does not do the trick for you but you do not want to resort to laser, PRP microneedling can be a great option. Platelet-rich plasma has been shown to have great regenerative properties, a fact that was proven when people started using PRP for hair loss.
When used after microneedling, PRP can enter deeper into your skin, nurturing it and repairing the tissue. Not only can this help with wrinkles and scarring, but it may also reduce different forms of pigmentation.
