Eyelid Surgery: Everything You Need To Know
- Posted on: Jun 24 2022
Eyelid surgery is a popular cosmetic procedure that can enhance your appearance in many ways. It can make you look younger, more rested and refreshed. Eyelid surgery can help if you have droopy upper or lower lids, folds or bags under the eyes. At Azul, Drs. Flaharty, Padilla and Yee are experts in eyelid surgery- all three have completed fellowships in oculoplastic surgery which focuses on eyelids.
Different types of eyelid surgery are available, including upper and lower blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), lateral canthoplasty (lower eyelid reduction), and eyelid tuck (or ptosis repair). Eyelid surgeries are often performed for cosmetic purposes, but can also be used to help relieve eyes with drooping lids that can impair your vision.
These procedures can be done with twilight anesthesia at our surgical center or with local anesthesia in our office. The type of eyelid surgery that will be performed for you depends on your specific needs.
Blepharoplasty (eyelid lift)
Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a surgical procedure that removes skin from the upper or lower eyelids and reshapes the tissue into a more youthful appearance. Fat pockets are sometimes removed and sometimes just reshaped to avoid creating hollowness. The Doctors will evaluate your eyelids and together determine what is right for you.
Eyelid surgery is perfect for those who have droopy or baggy eyelids, puffy under eye area, loose upper lid skin, hollowness under the eyes or sagging upper lids that impair vision.
Recovery from Eyelid Surgery
Recovery from eyelid surgery varies based on the extent of each patient’s procedure as well as their own tendencies for healing. Bruising, swelling and minor discomfort are commonly experienced after eyelid surgery. Some dryness itching or burning can temporarily occur during the healing process. Stitches are removed 1 week after surgery and most visible bruising and swelling is resolved within 2 weeks of the procedure. Light activity is permitted after two days but any strenuous activity should be avoided for 2 weeks following the surgery. You can resume use of eye make up and contact lenses once your stitches are out.
