Why Microneedling Might Be the Next Big Thing in Skincare
- Posted on: Jun 14 2017
When it comes to cosmetic surgery, everyone is looking for the next big thing. That new procedure that will revolutionize the entire industry, that everyone will be demanding. The next big thing in skincare may actually be an existing treatment that has gotten a 21st century makeover.
Microneedling is a great way to soften facial wrinkles, minimize enlarged pores and reduce the appearance of sunspots and scars while leaving you with tighter, younger looking skin. We actually offer two different treatments at Azul that involve microneedling. One is simply microneedling itself, which you can receive in our medical spa. The second is a little more high-tech, the non-surgical cosmetic procedure, INFINI Skin Tightening.
Microneedling was originally developed in the early 50s as a method to stimulate collagen and elastin growth under the skin. Of course, it probably should have just been called “Needling” back then. It wasn’t until technology grew and our manufacturing abilities advanced that Microneedling could truly embrace the “micro” part of its name, with tiny needles that usually range between 0.5 to 3.5 mm in diameter. Now that is micro! The beauty of microneedling is its simplicity. It works in two different ways, depending on the goal of the treatment.
First, microneedling can greatly enhance the effects of skincare products. Our skin is literally a protective layer around our body. This can make it difficult for useful and rejuvenating skincare products to get through to the deeper layers of the skin. Microneedling uses a roller with hundreds of super-fine vibrating needles to precisely puncture the skin. The needles are so tiny that they don’t cause any real damage, but they do allow skincare products to penetrate to the deeper layers of the skin that can really use the active ingredients.
Second, as we age, we lose collagen, which is what helps keeps our skin tight and firm. It is possible to stimulate collagen growth by intentionally injuring the deeper layers of the skin. As those layers heal, new collagen is produced, resulting in a firming and tightening of the skin.
There are no real side effects to microneedling, at worst you might get some redness and minor swelling for around 24 hours. It is probably one of our simplest treatments, but also one of our most effective.
Now, if you want something a little bit more high tech, we have just the microneedling treatment for you. INFINI Skin Tightening combines the effects of microneedling with radio frequency energy to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes and increase the production of collagen under the skin.
It does this by utilizing the microneedles to deliver RF (heat) energy to precise depths under the skin. The heat causes your existing collagen to contract, instantly giving you smoother and tighter skin. The real results show up a bit later though, as the heat energy also supercharges the effect of the microneedling. This means that, as the deeper layers of the skin heal, you will see noticeable and longer lasting skin tightening.
As INFINI is using both RF energy and microneedling, it can be a bit more intense than microneedling alone. To avoid discomfort, we apply a topical anesthetic to your skin before the procedure. Afterward, your skin will probably be red and irritated for about two days, somewhat resembling a feeling like a mild sunburn.
Although both microneedling and INFINI Skin Tightening can get you great results after just one treatment, it is after multiple treatments that the procedures truly shine. Most of our patients are very satisfied with their results after only two or three sessions.
So, we think that the next big thing is going to be a blast from the past with a 21st century twist. Microneedling and INFINI are both versatile and super effective treatments that truly deserve the spotlight.
