If you are like me, the first thing you notice when looking at a person is their eyes. A lovely pair of eyes can draw another person to you, and feeling confident about your eyes and their impact on your entire face will boost your self-confidence and attractiveness.

Unfortunately, the natural aging process begins to show around the eyelids before any other area of the face. The very thin skin of the eyelids combined with frequent blinking and rubbing lead to loose skin and wrinkles. Allergies, swelling and normal aging changes can cause the eyes to become puffy, swollen, with visible under-eye bags and loose skin. Overall, the eyes can start to look tired and heavy aging a person beyond their actual years.

Many of my patients are bothered when the thin, delicate skin around the eyelids begins to stretch and wrinkle, and their appearance gives way to a tired, worn-out aesthetic. Luckily, there are safe and effective ways to rejuvenate the eyelids that will improve the overall appearance of the face.

Blepharoplasty—eyelid surgery—is a very effective way to achieve a natural rejuvenation of the eyes resulting in a fresher, younger, and more alert look. The surgical process tightens and trims excess skin around the eyelids, removes fat deposits when necessary, fills hollows such as those under the eyes, and sculpts the eyes for a more youthful look.

Just about anyone with excessive skin, wrinkles, fat or contour irregularities around the eyes is a good candidates for eyelid surgery.

The procedure is quick and relatively painless so patients of all ages are good candidates for the procedure.

Recovering from eyelid surgery is a short and smooth process; most people resume normal activity after 7 to 10 days. It should be noted however that eyelid surgery is usually associated with swelling around the eyes which can last for a few weeks. The day after surgery, there will be some swelling and possible bruising but that quickly begins to disappear over the first week. The use of cool compresses can greatly reduce swelling and bruising around the eyes and face during those first 48 hours. Stitches may or may not be used depending on the procedure but if they are used they always come by day 6. At the two-week mark, most of the swelling and bruising will have cleared up. Sunglasses can be very helpful to patients when they’re out in public in the first week or two.

The results from eyelid surgery are universally successful and can make a dramatic improvement in the appearance in both the eyelids and face. Upper eyelid surgery can remove redundant skin and bulging bags creating a more bright eyed, youthful and alert appearance. Upper eyelid surgery is a very effective way to eliminate the tired, sad appearance around the eyes which occurs with age. Lower eyelid surgery can address loose skin, excessive bags, and dark circles resulting in a more rested and youthful appearance.

Our eyes are the focal point of the face. When we meet people our subconscious visual assessment always begins with the eyes. Fair or unfair judgement is made regarding our age, health, attractiveness, and even energy level based on the appearance of the eyes. How many times have I heard a patient say “Everyone keeps asking me if I’m tired, but I’m not”. This is the impact of aging eyelids.

Fortunately eyelid surgery is quick, relatively painless and has a very manageable recovery that will not disrupt your life. If you’re noticing these changes around the eyes please feel free to contact us for a consultation. In addition to eyelid surgery there are also a number of non surgical options including Botox, fillers, light lasers, and topical eye firming products that can also improve the aesthetics of the eyes.
