Raise the Bar By Raising The Brow

The other day I started to paint a portrait of my one-year-old nephew and as I sketched out the outline and features of his face I remembered back to my undergraduate years. One of my favorite art professors taught a portrait painting class in which we learned about the ratios of the face and proportions. He elaborated on how the eyes are at the middle of the head when you paint a person’s portrait, and the positioning of the brows can tell the story of what the eyes see. In becoming an Oculo-Facial Plastic Surgeon, I was able to combine my love of portrait painting with my passion for surgery based upon these revealing characteristics.

Many patients come in to Azul to address their droopy upper lids. Upper eyelid surgery is one of my favorite procedures to perform but sometimes it’s really more than just the lids, its actually the position of the brows. Just like my professor told me, if a person has heavy brows that have drifted to a lower position through the effects of time and gravity they can give the face a tired or grumpy appearance and make the lids appear heavy.
The appearance of the eyelids, and the overall appearance of the face, can be improved with a brow lift, which can often be covered by insurance if certain qualifications are met. I was trained in five different techniques to lift the brow, and depending on multiple factors, we can schedule an appointment to meet with you and assess which technique would be the best for you. In patients with a strong hairline, there is a form of brow lift where there aren’t any visual scars. In patients with heavy eyebrows, the incision can be hidden within the brow hairs. The goal of brow lifts isn’t to drastically change the appearance but to help a person achieve a natural but improved look. I like to tell patients that my goal at the end of the procedure is for your friends and family to look at you and ask if you have just gotten back from a vacation because you appear so rested.
So if you’ve noticed heavy upper eyelids or a drooping brow please come in for a consultation to be evaluated and see if one of these techniques would be appropriate for you and if insurance may cover your procedure.
