- Posted on: Sep 30 2021
Hair loss is a frustrating problem that affects millions of men and women. While patterns of hair loss can differ between men and women, many people seek treatment to re-establish hair growth or to preserve hair. Today, multiple treatment options exist, and we’d like to tell you about a new procedure being offered at Azul to restore hair for men and women called platelet-rich plasma.
Maybe you’ve heard of that skin-rejuvenating treatment called Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP? This is something that has come to be known as a “vampire facial because it utilizes the platelet-rich plasma that is found in the blood to stimulate a cascade of healing processes via growth factors and other nutrients naturally present in plasma. According to studies, PRP can work in a similar way on the scalp where it can stimulate dormant hair follicles to increase production capacity.
How PRP Treatment for Hair Loss Works
PRP treatments are nonsurgical procedures performed in the office. The process is carefully performed in specific steps. First, a standard blood draw from the arm is performed. The blood is put into a centrifuge, a medical device that spins the vial of blood at high speed to separate red blood cells from colorless plasma. The plasma, rich in platelets and growth factors, is then injected into the scalp where hair growth could use a boost. The doctor may place injections about every half-inch across the area where hair is thinning. The entire process typically takes no approximately 30 minutes.
The idea of needles and blood draws and injections can sound alarming. However, studies have shown that PRP injections come with very little risk. Most patients tolerate their treatment sessions without any anesthetic for numbing. However, the staff may apply cool air or ice packs to reduce the sensation of injections. Patients may take Tylenol after their treatment if they experience soreness or tenderness.
Is PRP Right for Your Hair Restoration Goals?
PRP is an excellent treatment option for hair loss and ample research data indicates its efficacy and safety. Patients who undergo a series of treatments report an increase in hair thickness, hair count. Still, some choose to make PRP injections part of a broader treatment program. PRP treatment may be safely combined with topical medications, serums or supplements designed to promote hair growth. Ultimately, nonsurgical hair restoration is not a one-and-done process. Patients should be prepared to see improvements over time.
