November Is Healthy Skin Month

As I was sitting out on the deck last night, enjoying the warm evening breeze and watching a lovely crescent moon hover over the Young woman with perfect skin clean and white teethhorizon, I was thinking about just how thankful I am. I have a wonderful wife, a rewarding job. I have three intelligent, beautiful, strong daughters. My mind wandered back to a night when the girls were younger, that we’d all spent together watching movies. The movies they loved as children tend to run together in my mind, but so many of them had such tenacious, capable leading girls, and I remember realizing how wonderful it is to live in a time where girls and women are encouraged to be independent, to make their own choices and to succeed at anything they choose.

I couldn’t be more proud of my family, or of the people I tend to think of as my “extended” family – all those who work with us here at Azul and Trilogy, and those who come in to see us to help let their own inner beauty shine through. We often hear that “beauty is only skin deep,” but that always makes me laugh a little, because our skin is really such a complex and vital organ. (Yes, you read that right: skin is an organ!) Treating each layer right is the secret to having and maintaining healthy skin.

The epidermis (the top-most layer) is, of course, the part everyone sees, and the part that is most affected by your environment: extreme temperatures, sun, wind, pollutants, etc. The weather here in Florida is very mild this time of year, but those of you who are visiting us from the harsher climates know very well the damage that extreme cold and strong winds can do to your skin! The job of the epidermis is to make new skin cells, to give your skin its tone and color, and to protect your body with special cells that are part of your immune system. The dermis, right below the epidermis, is also very important. It contains the nerve endings that let you feel things, blood vessels that feed your skin, oil glands that help keep your skin soft, smooth and waterproof, and two proteins, collagen and elastin, that give your skin strength and flexibility. The health of your dermis can be affected by many things, like nutritional balance, genetics and age.

So how can you maintain your healthy skin? A healthy diet and regular exercise are good things for your entire body, of course, and they’re also extremely important for the health of your skin. Daily gentle cleansing and moisturizing are a must as well, and always make sure to use a high-quality, high-SPF sunscreen, no matter what time of year it is. Here at Azul Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Spa, we also offer several facial treatments to restore the healthy, beautiful appearance of your skin. Our Signature Facial is tailored specifically to your needs, combining a unique blend of specific ingredients to nourish, hydrate and stimulate your skin. For deeper, longer lasting effects, we offer a number of different chemical peels, to increase cellular turnover and treat environmental damage, dry or oily skin and acne, revitalizing your skin’s radiance, tone and texture.

And, to better help you restore and maintain your healthy skin, we’re offering 10% off our facials and peels in honor of Healthy Skin Month! Contact us or give us a call at (239) 415-7576, or just stop in for a chat at any of our Fort Myers, Bonita Springs or Naples locations. Our mission is always to make you feel like part of our family – to be in your corner no matter what your goals are – and to help you let your inner beauty radiate through!

Best wishes for a happy holiday season,

Dr. Patrick Flaharty
