Dr. Flaharty and the team at Azul Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Spa would like to announce the arrival of Kybella, the new, non-surgical treatment for permanent reduction of the double chin or excessive fat under the chin.
“The Azul Team is very excited to be the first practice in Southwest Florida to offer Kybella. It is always important to bring in new treatments and technology and we are excited about Kybella” says Dr. Flaharty.
Excessive fat in the neck creates fullness and blunting of the jawline. This can make us look heavy and unfit. Removal of this excessive fat can improve our jawline and neckline giving us a much more fit and trim appearance. For years the only solution for removing excessive fat under the chin called submental fat, or a double chin, has been neck liposuction. Although liposuction is a very effective procedure and still the gold standard for permanent reduction of submental fat it is a surgical procedure which often requires anesthesia and may be associated with one to two weeks of downtime from the swelling, bruising and tenderness. Kybella was recently approved by the FDA as the first non-surgical treatment for permanent fat reduction under the chin.
Kybella, or deoxycholic acid, is a naturally occurring agent that dissolves fat cells. The product is made synthetically in a laboratory, but is identical to the naturally occurring agent in our bodies. Kybella is injected in small doses directly into the fatty deposits under our chin and will cause rupture of the local fat cells in the area. This process is called lipolysis, or lysis of fat cells. Once these fat cells rupture they will gradually be resorbed by your body resulting in a shrinkage of the fullness under the neck.
Treatments are done in the office using very tiny needles to inject the product and does not require anesthesia. The submental area is first marked to determine how much product is needed and to specifically outline the treatment area. The actual injections only take a few minutes. As the product begins to work it will cause some swelling and discomfort in the treated area which can last for a few weeks. As the swelling resolves you will see a gradual reduction of fat in the area. Full results are visible in 4 to 6 weeks and repeat treatments can be done at that time to further reduce the fat in the area. Most patients require 2 to 4 treatment sessions with some heavier necks requiring up to 6 treatments.
Best candidates are younger patients with neck fullness and good skin quality although patients of all ages with excessive submental fat may be appropriate for treatments. “This is an exciting new non-surgical treatment option for patients bothered by excessive fat under the chin. The treatment is easy to complete right in the office without anesthesia but patients need to be aware that the swelling and discomfort can last a few weeks.”
Dr. Flaharty is scheduling consultations for interested patients at Azul Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Spa.
