More Than Just the Eyes

We have covered so many eyelid conditions, concerns and treatments here on the Eyelid Expert blog, and today I get to do something special. This topic is near and dear to my heart and on the top of my mind every day – hair! Azul has recently started offering Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy as one of our many cutting-edge treatments, and so far we have seen incredible results.
As many of you know, I don’t have any hair. One of the reasons that I sport the haircut is that back when my hair started to thin, PRP wasn’t widely available. I’m so excited to have the opportunity to talk about hair loss because I want to help others find solutions that I didn’t even know were an option when my hair loss began. Pioneers of baldness, like Yul Brynner, The Rock and Bruce Willis, showed us that bald can be cool. However, I bet if they had started noticing thinning hair and had the option of PRP injections, they would’ve given it a shot!
PRP has been used for over 15 years in orthopedic joint injections with great success. Around 10 years ago, someone had the innovative idea to try injecting platelets into the scalp for the purpose of hair restoration. PRP is a very safe procedure because it uses the patient’s own platelets, which are obtained through a routine blood draw. Once the blood is spun down, the platelets are able to be extracted and subsequently used in the scalp injections. There is very little pain involved in this procedure, aside from the pinch of the routine blood draw.
I like to compare PRP injections to fertilizing a garden. As a child in Idaho, I used to help my mom plant the garden every spring. Before planting the seeds, we would fertilize the soil that the plants would have the best and healthiest environment possible to grow. This is similar to what I do with PRP injections into the scalp – the nutrient-rich platelets make a more ideal environment for hair growth.
During my Oculo-Facial Plastic Surgery training in Philadelphia, I did training on hair restoration and transplantation at the University of Pennsylvania. I was fascinated by all of the treatments available for anyone who was experiencing hair loss. During your complimentary consultation for PRP, I will go over questions about your medical history, and I will let you know if you are a candidate for PRP hair restoration!
