Helpful Skincare Tips When It’s Cold Outside (Well… for Florida!)

brunette girl smiling, snow on her hairThe changing of the seasons can be hard on the skin, even in the moderate temperatures we have in Florida. Although, thankfully, we don’t need to deal with the freezing conditions of farther north, dips in temperature and humidity can dry your skin and wreak havoc on your complexion. But with a few simple tips, you can easily manage the cold and keep your skin looking healthy no matter what the season or temperature.

1. Moisture

This may seem obvious, but it can require some extra effort when the temperature dips. Although your usual moisturizers work great when the air is warm, falling temperatures mean there is less moisture in the air, resulting in the drying of your skin. Having a more intensive moisturizer designed for colder weather is a lot like keeping a coat in the closet. You might not always need it, but when it starts to get a bit colder, you’ll be glad it’s there!

2. Watch the heat

Ironically, one of the things you must watch out for when it gets cold outside can be the warmth inside! By turning up the heat, you are further reducing the humidity in your home. Investing in a humidifier to keep the moisture in the air can go a long way to combat this dryness. Warm air isn’t all you should be cautious of. When you come in after a nippy day, you might be tempted to have a long, hot shower. That hot water might make you feel warmer, but it will also strip away moisture from your hair and skin. Reduce the length of those hot showers and drop the temperature to a comfortable warmth and your skin will thank you for it.

3. Drink more water

To refresh ourselves when it is hot, we will down a nice, cool glass of water without a thought. But when it is cooler out, we may more often turn to a nice, hot cup of tea. But nothing hydrates like water — it’s absolutely essential for healthy skin, all year-round. So even if you aren’t necessarily parched, follow your mother’s advice and drink several glasses of water a day. She knew what she was talking about.

4. Keep the sun at bay

We naturally tend to associate cold weather with darkness. But in Florida, even when it is cold, that bright sun can be damaging, regardless of the temperature on the ground. Always wear a sun hat, and make sure that you use a sunscreen to protect your skin all year long.

5. Always include a facial

A good skincare routine should involve getting a facial, regardless of the temperature outside. This is even more important when it is chillier than usual. Although celebrities may get facials once or twice a week, we recommend having at least one facial a month — not as an indulgence, but to rejuvenate and preserve your skin. At Azul Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Spa, facials are a key part of how we manage our patient’s both before and after cosmetic procedures. It’s very important not only to prepare for the best surgical outcome, but also to maintain the investment you are making.

We love the HydraFacial MD, as a cornerstone to skincare. This is a four-step treatment that combines hydration with exfoliation and extraction, leaving your skin feeling refreshed and radiant. First, we cleanse and exfoliate your skin, removing any dead skin cells and opening your pores. We follow this with a gentle acid peel, stripping away debris without irritating your skin. We then use a vacuum suction device to draw out impurities and unclog your pores. Finally, (and the most important part in colder weather!) we hydrate your skin with a special serum of antioxidants and hyaluronic acid. The entire treatment takes no longer than a half hour, and will leave your skin feeling smooth and healthy!

Of course, we also offer the Azul Signature Facial; and hour long treatment that can be customized to your skin’s needs. This is a hybrid treatment that is both therapeutic and relaxing. Think of a relaxing spa treatment with the rejuvenating power of products that can only be used in a physician’s office. What’s not to love about that!

6. Don’t forget your lips!

Cold weather is just an invitation for chapped lips. This one is easy, make sure you have a good lip balm with you and apply it whenever you feel is necessary.

7. Cleanse smart

A good gel cleanser can be an excellent choice in the summer, but when it gets colder, you should reach for a cream-based cleanser. Gels can dry your skin, so using a cream to remove makeup will go a long way toward maintaining your skin’s good hydration.

The bottom line is that you should exercise a proper skincare routine, regardless of the temperature outside. Many people, especially in the cooler months, don’t take preventative steps to invest in proper skincare and stop the signs of aging before they happen. By taking proper care of your skin now, you can prevent the premature aging of your skin. So no matter what your age, keep in mind these helpful hints and your skin will look fantastic no matter what the weather!
