Freeze Away Fat? Can CoolSculpting Accomplish this Without Recovery Time?
- Posted on: Nov 6 2015
Patients inquiring about noninvasive fat reduction procedures often ask us whether having something like CoolSculpting done will interfere with how they go about their daily lives. Can a person having regular CoolSculpting treatments expect to maintain their usual work and life routines without any significant recovery time? Although the short answer to this is “yes,” our straightforward, more-considered answer to this common question is “it depends.”
The amount of fat that is removed by the CoolSculpting procedure depends on how close a person is to their ideal body weight. Are you 10, 20, or 30 pounds away from your Ideal Body Weight (IBW)? The further away you are, the tougher it may be to get a result you are pleased with. We often advise that it may take several CoolSculpting sessions to see the sort of significant changes many patients desire. CoolSculpting, being noninvasive, is a gentler alternative to traditional liposuction or other fat reduction procedures. This does not mean that it is ineffective, but we try to let patients know that results will take time and multiple sessions to achieve, especially if they are further from their IBW.
Pain and recovery time also depends on the individual person. We find that most people experience minimal pain and can easily continue with all normal activities and work. For others, itthere can be some discomfort with the procedure. While there is technically no formal recovery period, and CoolSculpting is a quick and easy in-office procedure requiring no sedation, those patients who do have more discomfort may have to minimize routine activities for a short period of time. If you have concerns, we are happy to discuss the possible outcomes and what to do to minimize any discomfort.
If you are considering the CoolSculpting procedure, please contact our office at 239-415-7576 for a free consultation appointment. During this consultation, our knowledgeable staff will teach you the ins and outs of CoolSculpting and answer any questions you may have. In the meantime, we have provided some answers to common questions about CoolSculpting below.
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a noninvasive procedure that uses a technology called “cryolipolysis.” This is a cooling/freezing technology with which we take fat to just above the freezing point. Fat cells are selectively destroyed, leaving your other cells healthy and intact. As the fat cells die, the body slowly reabsorbs and then excretes them.
How Long Is a Session? How Soon Are Results Seen?
In each session, we use an applicator or cooling plate which we apply to the desired body area for one hour. Following the cooling/freezing session, we give a two-minute massage to the treatment area, which stimulates the body to reabsorb the dead fat cells.
Depending on the area and the amount of excess body fat, several sessions may be needed in an area to achieve desired results. Our treatments are typically conducted about a month apart, so it could take several months to see best results. However, results usually improve with time, assuming you maintain the same weight. After all, if you’re putting on more weight at the same time as trying to get rid of fat cells, it’s like tugging on opposite ends of a rope—you won’t get anywhere!
