Fat is a Critical Aspect of Facial Rejuvenation! Who Knew?

dark skinned female with dark hair smiling against a gray background with her hands up to her faceFacial aging does not begin and end with lines and wrinkles. The loss of subcutaneous facial fat, which often alters the very shape of the face, can be troubling for many people. Historically, those looking to correct these markers of aging did so with facelift surgeries. However, more recently, doctors and nurses have discovered the power of dermal fillers. This less invasive technique has become an incredibly effective way to smooth lines and creases while restoring youthful volume to the cheeks, temples, and lips. At our Azul offices, Dr. Flaharty and his staff take organic approaches to correcting aging – using existing fat cells to beautifully and naturally rejuvenate the face. Below we discuss the process of fat transfer and the many benefits associated with it.

What is Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer is exactly as it sounds. It is a two-step procedure in which fat cells are extracted from one area and then introduced into another. Dr. Flaharty refers to his fat transfer technique as 3D rejuvenation because, unlike dermal fillers, autologous fat, inserted strategically in small deposits, can add more volume for more natural restructuring. Our grafting technique utilizes the Adivive™ Fat Transfer System, a platform that incorporates innovative technologies to “squeeze out” the maximum amount of fluids from the harvested fat. Doing so yields higher-volume survival rates of the transferred fat cells. This process is quick, taking only about an hour!

Recovering from Fat Transfer

The recovery process is often a topic of interest for those exploring procedures, and rightfully so. Even though fat transfer is a non-surgical procedure, there are still certain outcomes that are observed. Patients who undergo fat transfer should anticipate swelling and bruising to last for about two weeks, as the necessary fat cells are extracted through liposuction, most often from the abdomen or love handles. Depending on the extensiveness of the procedure, a compression garment may be worn afterwards to prevent fluid accumulation and excessive swelling. This prevents fluid accumulation and excessive swelling. Bruising is a natural side effect of liposuction, as are mild tenderness and soreness.

The recovery of the facial area includes swelling and bruising that last from a week to two weeks. Because new fat cells have been introduced into areas of the face, swelling may seem severe. This is not an indication of tissue trauma but of the integration of fat cells into their new location. In time, the swelling subsides to reveal a beautifully rejuvenated face.
