Pucker Up: Tips for Beautiful Lips

Hooray! It’s great to be back from maternity leave! My mind turns to the simple things to pamper ourselves a little and bring out our inner diva! Let’s talk about lips and some of our best strategies for reducing those fine lines that lipstick might bleed into, or how to add more volume to your lips while still retaining your natural look.
There are basically three kinds of wrinkles that can occur around the lips: smile lines that extend from your nose down to the edges of your mouth, marionette lines that run down from the edges of your mouth to your chin, and simple vertical lines that are caused by regular lip movement and natural aging. These vertical lip lines are often the most annoying, because they are to blame when your lipstick “bleeds” – blurring that crisp line we all want!
There are a number of ways we can treat these three kinds of wrinkles at Azul, but the easiest, least invasive and most effective way to treat them is my own personal favorite – by using dermal fillers.
If you’ve ever used a caulking gun or a glue gun for home crafts, then you have an idea of how dermal fillers work. We inject a small amount of our chosen filler directly into your wrinkles, filling them in to replace lost collagen. Once filled, no one will ever know that there was a wrinkle there! And we can also inject your lips themselves to make them instantly fuller, adding back volume that you’ve lost over the years.
We offer a number of different dermal fillers at Azul, but the best to fill in wrinkles along the lips are Restylane and Juvéderm. Both of these fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a natural substance already found in your body. These help restore your skin’s volume by naturally augmenting the collagen that provides structure to your skin.
One of the things I love most about dermal fillers is the instant result. There is no recovery period and you will simply walk out of office with full, beautiful lips. There might be some very minor bruising in the areas injected, but these will fade after a day or two.
You may want to consider combining a dermal filler treatment with a round of Botox. These are complementary procedures that work beautifully together to eliminate facial wrinkles. We can do both procedures at once, so you can have everything done in just one visit.
There are also ways to minimize the appearance of lip wrinkles without any cosmetic procedures at all. Professional makeup artists use lighter colored lipsticks, so the eye isn’t automatically drawn to the lips. Wearing bright lipstick (that wine red or berry pink you love so much!) will instantly bring focus to your lips, as well as to the lines surrounding them. So go for a rosy coral or pearl instead, and add a dash of color without highlighting those wrinkles.
Moisturizers are an absolute godsend for lip wrinkles. Lips soak up moisture like a sponge, so by using a fantastic lip balm, you can hydrate the lips while also helping to fill in some of the fine lines (just apply liberally under lipstick).
Lip plumping topical products come in two types; those with immediate and the longer term results. Immediate lip plumpers contain a substance that literally plumps your lips right away, lasting for about 1-2 hours. The longer term products employ an active ingredient that builds tissue in the lips over a 6 week period (You can also use it to fill in the lines above your lips!). We are débuting both types of products this month!
The Mineral Makeup products for lips from our own Trilogy Laboratories are perfect for wrinkle-lined lips. Our Mineral Makeup lipstick doesn’t draw moisture out of the lips like other lipsticks can, and it stays on for hours and doesn’t bleed. Our Lip Balm is a natural emollient that includes SPF protection. Trilogy Laboratories creates the entirety of Azul’s skincare line, and every product receives both Drs. Kristen and Patrick Flaharty’s stamp of approval before being offered to you.
