A New Breakthrough Treatment for Stubborn Cellulite is Now Available

Having cellulite is normal, but frustrating for a lot of women. Sometimes referred to as “cottage cheese skin” or an “orange-peel” texture, cellulite usually develops on the buttocks and thighs, but can also appear on the abdomen and other areas. People get cellulite not because they are overweight, but because the fibrous bands of connective tissue beneath the skin can create depressions. Fatty tissue, even when not in excess, pushes outward against these bands, resulting in dimples.
We mentioned that cellulite does not develop due to excess weight. This is an important point to repeat because some people mistakenly believe that if they lose weight, their cellulite will disappear. This could be a major disappointment for those who choose to undergo a procedure like liposuction in hopes of eliminating that orange-peel texture. The answer to cellulite reduction lies not in eliminating fatty tissue but in addressing the perpendicular fibrous bands that tether the skin. Fortunately, research has discovered how to do that.
QWO, The Cellulite Treatment Everyone is Talking About
Recently, the FDA approved a new cellulite treatment, collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes, for the treatment of mild to moderate cellulite in the buttocks area. Marketed under the brand name QWO, this biologic injectable treatment may just be the new treatment of the year! There’s never really been anything that has worked well for cellulite. In the Phase 2 study for FDA approval, 375 women received up to 12 injections of collagenase clostridium histolyticum in a series of up to 3 treatments. Another group of women received placebo injections. Clinicians and patients each rated the appearance of cellulite before treatment and approximately one month after the final injections took place. A 0 rating described no evidence of cellulite. A 4 rating described severe cellulite. At the conclusion of the Phase 2 study, 10% of the participants who received QWO rated an improvement of 2 points or more. Approximately 45% of QWO patients reported at least 1-point improvement.
QWO works by breaking down the collagen that makes up the fibrous bands that pull on the skin. It also stimulates the growth of new collagen in the skin, leading to subtle thickening that smoothes appearance even further. Patients need no downtime after QWO injections, though they can expect significant bruising after their initial treatment. After this, subsequent treatments typically do not cause this side effect to the same degree.
