JUVÉDERM®
As we age, we lose volume in our face and start to see fine lines and wrinkles. At Azul Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Spa, we offer the entire Juvéderm family of dermal fillers to help treat these signs of aging.
Juvéderm is used to fill and smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It is available in a variety of formulations designed to target specific types and depths of wrinkles, folds as well as generalized volume loss.
What is Juvéderm?
Juvéderm is made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance in the body that helps maintain skin volume and hydration as well as joint lubrication and cushioning. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture, absorbing more than 1,000 times its weight in water. It also binds with collagen and elastin, transporting essential nutrients to the fibers that make up much of the support structure of the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Juvéderm and our other dermal fillers is not derived from animal sources.
Is Juvéderm right for me?
The Juvéderm family of fillers is incredibly popular across the globe. The question of if they will work for you is a question of the type of wrinkle you’re trying to erase. Juvéderm works on what is known as “static” wrinkles. These are wrinkles, creases, and areas of volume loss that are caused by sun damage, declining collagen production, environmental factors, and personal habits such as smoking. Static wrinkles show themselves at all times. Smile lines, marionette lines, parentheses lines, barcode lines, volume loss in the cheeks and lips — these are all static wrinkles. Volume loss and static wrinkles are perfect for one of the Juvéderm products.
PATIENT TESTIMONIAL
“I noticed my face started looking tired. But I had hardly any wrinkles. I decided to see Dr Flaharty and he was honest about not needing Botox on certain area but suggested filler in my cheeks. Well the results are wonderful!!! I love the way my cheeks look now. I am told I look very refreshed and my skin looks soft as well. I highly recommend Dr. Flaharty”
Treating Dynamic Wrinkles
If, however, you’re trying to erase wrinkles on the upper third of the face, such as crow’s feet, the 11s between your brows, or forehead lines, Juvéderm may not the answer. These are called “dynamic” wrinkles, and they form as the result of muscle contractions under the skin when we make everyday expressions such as frowning, squinting, and the like. These expressions engage muscles on the upper third of the face, creating wrinkles above them. Dynamic wrinkles are the domain of BOTOX (or DYSPORT). BOTOX and DYSPORT relax the muscles that create the wrinkles. Dermal fillers don’t work on dynamic wrinkles, and BOTOX doesn’t work on static wrinkles. However, on occasion, a dynamic wrinkle has become so deep or “grooved”, that Dr. Flaharty or one of our Master Injectors will use a dermal filler to fill in the groove.

Types of Juvéderm
The original Juvéderm was first approved by the FDA in June 2006. Since that time, Allergan, the company that makes these dermal fillers, has expanded the line to target different wrinkles, lines and areas of volume loss. We carry the full line at Azul. Here is the description of each product and what it is typically meant to address.
Juvéderm XC: As the skin loses elasticity and moisture, some people form relatively deep parentheses lines that frame the corners of the mouth and creases that run from the nose to the mouth (nasolabial folds). Juvéderm XC adds volume beneath the skin to smooth these lines and folds. This was the original Juvéderm product and is still the most popular.
Juvéderm Voluma XC: Our team may call it “age-related mid-face volume loss,” but you simply know it as sagging cheeks. Over time, as you lose the collagen to support your skin and as your underlying muscles weaken, your cheeks flatten. Juvéderm Voluma XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area. Plump cheeks are a tenet of a younger look. Think of Voluma as restoring the “apples” of your cheeks. Voluma often has the added benefit of some lower face and jowl lifting as a byproduct of restoring cheek shape and profile.
Juvéderm Ultra XC: Most people don’t think of their lips as having lost volume, but our lips thin as we get older, losing the same support as our skin. Others may never have been happy with the fullness of their lips. Juvéderm Ultra XC provides or returns fullness and fills the vertical wrinkles that form on our lips. This was the first dermal filler created for the lips.
Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC: Like Ultra, Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC adds volume to the lips and areas around the mouth. Ultra Plus is composed of bigger molecules than Ultra, making it thicker and a little longer lasting. Ultra Plus is better for more significant wrinkles and folds and for extra lip volume enhancement. The volume increase is noticeable with both Ultra and Ultra Plus.
Juvéderm Volbella XC is perfect for adding subtle volume and shape to the lips. Plus, it erases the vertical lines, known as barcode lines, that come from volume loss. Juvéderm Volbella XC does this without overtly enlarging the lips. It is a more subtle option when compared with Ultra or Ultra Plus.
Juvéderm Vollure XC is the newest addition to the Juvéderm family of dermal fillers. Vollure is designed for the correction of moderate to deep creases and wrinkles such as nasolabial folds running from the nose down to the corners of the mouth, and parentheses lines framing the mouth.
Juvederm Treatment
Having an area of volume loss filled with Juvéderm is simple and takes just 15-30 minutes. For most patients at Azul, we apply topical numbing cream prior to your injections to alleviate any discomfort, so you need to allow 20 – 30 minutes for that to take effect.
How many Juvéderm injections will I need?
Dr. Flaharty and our Master Injectors will make a number of small injections with each syringe of Juvederm. The number of syringes needed and individual injections given during a session varies depending on what you are treating. You may receive full correction in a single visit, or choose to space your treatments out. You will see your results immediately and results will last until your body eventually absorbs the hyaluronic acid and another maintenance treatment session is needed.
The Brilliant Distinctions program makes it easy for you to save money on your favorite treatments. Each time you purchase an Allergan product — whether it’s BOTOX Cosmetic, Juvéderm, or LATISSE — you earn points that you can use to save on future treatments. It’s easy and free to join Brilliant Distinctions.
Recovery After Juvéderm Injections
There is no recovery or downtime after your injections. You can return to work or your normal activities immediately after your treatment session. Your results are immediate, as well. You may have some slight swelling or pin-prick redness at the injection site. We provide small ice-packs should you have any swelling. We also have a make-up station for make-up touch-ups should you wish to return to work or if you are headed out to meet friends.
How long will my results last with Juvéderm?
The duration of most injectables varies somewhat based on the individual patient’s metabolism. Still, there are some general measures of the durability of these products:
- Juvéderm Voluma XC is the longest-lasting hyaluronic filler, restoring cheek volume for 18-24 months.
- Juvéderm XC, Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC, Vollure XC, and Volbella XC last between 9-12 months.
