Dermaplaning

Dull and uneven-looking skin can happen to women and men, especially as we get older. Dead skin stays on longer than it should, making the surface appear dry and flaky, and natural, peach fuzz prevents the skin from clear and luminous. A great option for facial rejuvenation is dermaplaning, which immediately reveals the healthy skin underneath. At Azul® Cosmetic Surgery & Medical Spa, women and men looking to obtain an instant glow without downtime can schedule a dermaplaning treatment.
Candidates for Dermaplaning
Almost anyone can be a candidate for dermaplaning, as the treatment is suitable for every skin type. That said, ideal candidates are those who wish to improve their skin tone and texture without having to go through invasive procedures. If you have dull or dry skin with uneven pigmentation, dermaplaning could be the treatment for you.
Since dermaplaning removes the dead skin that creates a layer over your face, it also helps improve skincare absorption. This makes it an effective option for people who follow specialized skincare products and want to avoid clogged pores.
Men and women with skin concerns like rosacea or psoriasis or those who have active acne breakouts may not be good candidates for Dermaplaning. The same thing applies to individuals with very sensitive skin, as this can exacerbate the irritation. Scheduling a consultation with our Azul® providers will help determine if dermaplaning is the right choice for your needs.
How Dermaplaning Works
Dermaplaning is a simple treatment where a medical-grade scalpel is used to gently exfoliate the dead skin and peach fuzz from the face. After cleansing and prepping the skin, one of our skilled providers will gently guide the scalpel at an angle in short strikes along the skin. The motion is similar to shaving, but instead of just taking the hair off, it removes the outermost layer of the skin.
Once the dead skin is removed and gently cleansed, our providers will apply soothing and moisturizing serums. At this point, they will also recommend a series of products to avoid for a day or two (e.g., retinol) that can be harsh on the skin.
The treatment is painless and, unless you are especially sensitive (at which point you should reconsider getting the treatment), no anesthesia is needed. Most patients are out of the office within 30 minutes and are able to return to their daily routines. Some people choose to combine dermaplaning with skin resurfacing treatments like chemical peels for better results, but it’s not mandatory.
Recovery After Dermaplaning
One of the greatest advantages of dermaplaning is that it requires minimal to no downtime. If your skin is generally healthy to begin with, there shouldn’t be any issues, with most patients returning to their daily routines right away.
Some side effects can still occur, but they are usually mild and subside within a few hours after the procedure. Redness and some swelling could also occur but can be kept under control with a soothing serum. You may notice some small whiteheads and enlarged pores after the treatment, but they are rarely visible and are short-lived.
Your skin is quite sensitive at this point, so make sure to avoid direct sunlight for a few hours. Use sunblock whenever you go out and skip harsh exfoliants for about 48 hours. Gentle skincare is your best friend at this point. Avoid touching your face, as bacteria can easily affect the sensitive skin. Our providers at Azul® can offer some skincare recommendations to make sure your recovery is as smooth as possible.
Dermaplaning Results
Dermaplaning results are often visible right after getting the treatment. Skin tone should appear brighter and even, and the serums can add even more to the luminosity. The skin can also feel plumper, as skincare products are more easily absorbed after the treatment.
Makeup should be avoided for about one day to let the skin recover, but after that, you’ll notice it looks smoother. Since there are no longer any dead skin cells or peach fuzz, your foundation should no longer form patches or buildup, ultimately giving you a smooth, airbrushed look. In the long term, especially with consistent use, patients can notice improved skin texture with fewer breakouts.
The results from dermaplaning generally last about one month, depending on your skin type. For example, individuals with mature skin can enjoy the results longer, as the turnover slows down with age. Following a consistent skincare routine with proper hydration and exfoliation can also prolong the results. To keep the skin looking smooth, consider booking a dermaplaning treatment at Azul® Cosmetic Surgery & Medical Spa once every four to six weeks.
