Our eyelids are often the first area of the face to show signs of aging. The thin, delicate eyelid skin stretches and wrinkles faster than other areas of the face. Loose skin, protruding fat pockets, and deepening crows feet and wrinkles are all signs of aging eyelids. We can see these changes in the upper and lower eyelids as early as age 30 and progressing over the years. Heavy, redundant eyelid skin can weigh down the upper eyelids even compromising peripheral vision. In some cases upper eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty may be covered by insurance.
Fortunately modern blepharoplasty surgery provides a safe and effective method for rejuvenating the eyelids. Surgical techniques have advanced in many way yielding better results with less downtime. Redundant skin can be trimmed and tightened, excessive fat sculpted where necessary, and hollows filled resulting in a complete rejuvenation of the eyelids and the surrounding tissues. Facial fillers, chemical peels, and laser peels can all be added to these procedures to further enhance the cosmetic result. These modern techniques are quicker and less invasive than ever before resulting in less down time and a quicker return to normal activities.
These procedures are now performed under light intravenous sedation for maximum safety and patient comfort. Eyelid surgery can be performed as an isolated procedure or in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures including a brow lift, face and neck lift, neck liposuction, chemical peels, laser peels, and facial fillers. This comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation, which we call Harmonious Facial Rejuvenation, typically yields superior and long lasting results by rejuvenating the entire face in a single session.
As with any surgery, the recovery after blepharoplasty can include some swelling, bruising and minor discomfort. Cold compresses are helpful to reduce the swelling and bruising the first few days after surgery. Minor eye irritation such as dryness, itching, burning, tearing or blurring of the eyes may occur in the first few weeks. Skin sutures will be removed one week after surgery and most visible swelling and bruising resolves in the first two weeks. Eye make-up and contact lenses can be worn after one week. Light activity can be resumed after 2 days but patients are asked to hold off on strenuous exercise for 2 weeks. Most people return to work in 7 days but are free to return sooner if they desire.
