Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin are all forms of botulinum toxin type A. Injected in very minute amounts this protein temporarily blocks the conduction between the nerve and the muscle temporarily weakening the muscle. There are many muscles of facial expression that are responsible for facial animation. Although these muscles are important for non-verbal communication, they can also cause unwanted lines and creases such as frown lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet, lip lines, and neck bands. Using these two agents we can selectively weaken certain muscles of facial expression thereby smoothing the overlying skin. This can be used to eliminate frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet, lip lines, and neck bands resulting in a more youthful, refreshed appearance.
Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin injections are typically performed in the office setting. The treatment areas are first numbed with a topical anesthetic cream and ice that are both very
effective in reducing discomfort. Treatments are very quick taking only minutes and there is no downtime. Patients can return to work immediately. Results of these treatments are visible within a few days and can last for 4 to 6 months.
